News is out that it is not just Takahata Isao’s「かぐや姫の物語」(Kaguya Hime no Monogatari/The Tale of Princess of Kaguya, Japan, 2013) that is getting a release via STUDIOCANAL in the UK next month, but that a documentary about the animation will be made available as well.

Takahata Isao’s 「かぐや姫の物語」(Kaguya Hime no Monogatari/The Tale of the Princess Kaguya) was released in Japan more than a year ago on November 23, 2013. It has screened at a number of festivals around the world and, thanks to North American distributor GKIDS, is currently in US cinemas – meaning, it has been seemingly everywhere except in the UK. While we still do not have an exact release date, Studio Canal (the film’s UK distributor) has now at least offered a vaguely projected one: Continue reading →

kaguya hime

Recently I came across a Tumblr post from rnedicinal about the Japanese folktale of かぐや姫 (Kaguya Hime/Princess Kaguya), which of course provided the basis for Studio Ghibli’s forthcoming film. Other than including two traditional paintings of Kaguya, the poster also shared the actual tale: Continue reading →

A few days ago NHK, a Japanese TV station, aired a special Ghibli-Disney programme that included a 25 seconds clip of the other Studio Ghibli movie that is being released this year: Takahata Isao’s 「かぐや姫の物語」(Kaguya Hime no Monogatari/The Story of Princess Kaguya, Japan, 2013). The clip is not so much another teaser trailer as an animated flip book of images (or a series of film stills, if you prefer), which offer a charming glimpse into the mysterious world of the princess. Watch for yourself:

kaguya hime

I have to admit this just came totally out of the left field for me: a friend of mine (knowing that I’m the Ghibli fan that I am) posted this clip on my Facebook page this morning with the words “You’ll understand more of this than me”:

Now, let me tell you, I had literally just woken up (yeah, I’m that kinda person that checks her email first thing in the morning, before I’ve even gotten out of bed), it was 6 am and I hadn’t even put my contacts in yet. So, blurry-eyed and half-asleep I was, but it took me no more than a few seconds to realise: Kaguya Hime! It’s Kaguya Hime! Continue reading →

An early Christmas present came from Studio Ghibli today in the form of an official announcement of its next two feature films:「風立ちぬ」(Kaze Tachinu/The Wind Rises) and「かぐや姫の物語」(Kaguya Hime no Monogatari/The Story of Princess Kaguya), directed by Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao respectively. Miscellanea

Drama recommendations:

– 미생 (Misaeng, 2014). No better kdrama than this. A rare slice-of-life offering from Korea.

–「ありふれた奇跡」(Arifureta Kiseki/Ordinary Miracle, 2009). One of those rare gems I randomly stumbled across.
