News is out that it is not just Takahata Isao’s「かぐや姫の物語」(Kaguya Hime no Monogatari/The Tale of Princess of Kaguya, Japan, 2013) that is getting a release via STUDIOCANAL in the UK next month, but that a documentary about the animation will be made available as well.
The documentary comes with the title Isao Takahata and His Tale of the Princess Kaguya and was directed by Miki Akira and Sato Hidekazu. I’m not 100% of the Japanese title but it seems to be「かぐや姫の物語 をつくる」(Kaguya Hime no Monogatari wo Tsukuru) as this is what pops up when you search for a Princess Kaguya documentary online. However, it seems the original Japanese release runs 200 minutes, while the UK version is down to 86 minutes.
The documentary consists of two parts: the first covers the beginnings of the project (how it came about, Takahata’s involvement, etc.), while the second tells about the later stages of the project when the production process has significantly fallen behind schedule and changes need to be made.
Kaguya Hime open in cinemas on March 20th, while Isao Takahata and His Tale of Princess Kaguya follows, on DVD and in digital form (via iTunes), on March 23rd.

I have to wait until the end of April to see Princess Kaguya. I’m going to book a day off work to go!
End of April?
Well, you could watch Marnie in the meantime instead. The Japanese DVD comes with English subtitles. Yesasia has it, but it’s 30 GBP or something… (not something I can afford atm, or at least not justify to afford…).
I can wait a year for Marnie (because that’s probably how long it will take to get into cinemas in the UK). The multiplex I have watched Ghibli films in since Spirited Away had posters but the distro’s official list of cinemas screening Kaguya didn’t include said multiplex. I have to wait a month and go to a rather nice but out of the way art house cinema.
