Scotland Loves Anime 2014

The autumn is a-coming and it’s not just the colourful leaves on the ground that are telling me that: the first programme announcements for various film festivals are dropping. Scotland Loves Anime (SLA), which is scheduled for October, was revealed its line-up a few days ago, with Raindance (September) followed yesterday, while the London Film Festival (October) programme is due today and the London Korean Film Festival (October/November) one on September 15.

The dates for this year’s SLA are October 10-13 for Glasgow (venue: Glasgow Film Theatre) and October 13-19 for Edinburgh (Filmhouse Cinema). That exactly overlaps with the London Film Festival, meaning that it’s pretty much a choice between one or the other – a pity.

As every year, the offerings at Scotland Loves Anime are a diverse medley, although they do seem to be a bit heavy on action and sci-fi this time round. As always, there will be film screenings as well as a number of special events, including the by now traditional Education Day as well as some special guest talks (details on the official website). Fans in both Glasgow and Edinburgh can attend screenings of the following films:

  • 「ジョバンニの島」 (Giovanni no Shima/Giovanni’s Island, 2014)

Dir. by Nishikubo Mizuho.

This is the film I would be most interested in seeing – I have heard lots of good things about it and really hope it will get a wider UK release soon.
