There are a handful of Ghibli news bits that have been announced recently, so here’s a summary in case you have missed them:
Older Ghibli Releases
North American distributor Discotek Media revealed a few days ago that it would be releasing some older, harder-to-come-by works that Ghibli founders Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao were involved with in pre-Ghibli times. First up in September is「名探偵ホームズ」(Meitantei Hōmuzu/Sherlock Hound, Japan, 1984), a Japanese anime series for which Miyazaki directed episodes 3-5 and 9-10. The story is based on Sir Arthur’s Conan Doyle’s famous Sherlock Holmes and features dogs instead of people. Discothek Media’s release will be on DVD, with an English dub as well as Japanese audio track plus English subtitles.
Release number two is Takahata Isao’s film debut –「太陽の王子 ホルスの大冒険」 (Taiyō no Ōji: Horusu no Daibōken/Hols: Prince of the Sun aka The Little Norse Prince or Little Norse Prince Valiant, Japan, 1968), which will be available from December onwards if all goes well. I confess I don’t know much about either of these two works, but will be looking forward to their English-languages. Good thing too I have an all-region DVD player!
North American Distribution Rights for Ghibli Docu
GKIDS has acquired the distribution rights for the Ghibli documentary「夢と狂気の王国」(Yume to Kyōki no Ōkoku/The Kingdom of Dreams & Madness, Japan, 2013) in North America. The documentary was directed by Sunada Mami and follows the three key Studio Ghibli members – Miyazaki Hayao while working on「風立ちぬ」(Kaze Tachinu/The Wind Rises, Japan, 2013), Takahata Isao while directing「かぐや姫の物語」(Kaguya Hime no Monogatari/Princess Kaguya, Japan, 2013) and producer Suzuki Toshio.
No word on UK distribution unfortunately.
- A friend of mine shared a music video with me the other day, which Miyazaki worked on – On Your Mark & Castles in the Air (CHAGE & ASKA PV). Here it is for you to enjoy:
P.S. Ghiblits = Ghibli News Tid Bits… no, there’s no real logic in this coinage, but I just felt like making up a word. ^_^
