Kodama, happily speechless at the announcement. 🙂

Exciting news from the Whole Hog Theatre today: They are taking their stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke to Japan! Early this morning they tweeted the following:

…and followed up with a more detailed post on their Whole Hog Theatre website and the launch of a separate website (both in English and 日本語) just for the performance in Japan.

I have to admit that I felt a tinge of jealousy there for a moment, all those lucky people that will get to watch the show in Tokyo! I mean, that surely would be the best place to experience it all, in the homeland of Mononoke Hime and with Miyazaki & Co. bound to be in the audience?

The performance will be in English with Japanese subtitles and tickets will go on (pre-) sale tomorrow – and if London is anything to go by (April tickets sold out in less than 72 hours, July ones in 4 hours), I would not wait to get my hand on a ticket if I were in Tokyo.

The website, by the way, includes a 55 second mini-trailer. It’s mostly text, but there are some shots from rehearsals, which allow us to imagine at least a little bit what things might look like on the stage:

Looks like… Moro!

The Whole Hog Theatre also tweeted a number of photographs from the press conference in Nicofarre (Google suggests this some locale in Roppongi, Tokyo?), including this one, which other than showing the faces of the awesome people behind the production, again give us hint of what things might look like with that lovely kodama ♥ puppet:

That’s Alex Ruttner, the play’s director, with the kodama on her shoulder and Polly Clare Boon, the concept artist and set designer, on her right. And, if I’m not wrong, next to them is Suzuki Toshio, smiling broadly (all excited about the stage adaption I’m sure!) – he is one of the producers for many Studio Ghibli (and some other) films.

Fingers crossed this will be the beginning of a much greater world tour.
