After missing three Trailer Weeklies (which I plan to make up for), I’m not quite sure where to start, because although I did not post any trailers over the past few weeks, I did bookmark quite a few films. I suppose the best is just to jump right in and see what we end up with!

  • Amour (Amour, Austria/France/Germany, 2012) – directed by Michael Haneke. Amour recently won the Palme d’Or, the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, which elevated the Austrian filmmaker to the exclusive rank of two-time Palme d’Or winner (he previously received the award for Das weiße Band/The White Ribbon in 2009)The reception of Amour so far has been outstanding, critics praising the sensitive and highly realistic take on an elderly couple facing the end of life. This short video interview with Haneke talking about the film (from the Guardian) is also quite interesting (or maybe I was just entertained by his Viennese accent).
  • Holy Motors (France, 2012) – Directed by Leos Carax. It’s another film that screened at Cannes but, unlike Amour, left empty-handed. The cast – ranging from Eva Mendes to Kylie Minogue – doesn’t get me interested and the trailer doesn’t do much to that effect either. Reviews, however, have been intriguing, with Peter Bradford from the Guardian writing, “I know, in my heart of hearts, that [Carax’s] film was not as good as Haneke’s”, but adding that it offers the sort of thing one hopes to find at film festivals, “something provocative, exciting, something with the shock of the new” (quote source). Other critics seem to largely concur that Holy Motors has its flaws, is wacky and impossible to comprehend with any normal sense of logic and yet is “moving”, “exhilarating”, even “genius” (quote sources). Sounds like a must-watch to me.
  • 「トーキョードリフター」 (Tōkyōdorifutā/Tokyo Drifter, Japan, 2011) – Trailer not subtitled. Directed by Suzuki Seijun, Tōkyōdorifutā is set to screen at the Edinburgh International Film Festival later this month. It’s “[d]eliberately lo-tech” (as is obvious from the trailer) and “a conceptual concert film, an allegory of the solitude of the artist, and a document of the visual experience of Tokyo shortly after the March 11 2011 disaster” (quotes from the festival catalogue). Of course, that’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but to me this “own loopy brand of filmmaking, featuring gorgeous cinematography, unconventional storytelling techniques, and a dark sense of humour” (quote from Rotten Tomatoes) puts it onto the to-see list.
  • 밀월도 가는 길 (Milwoldo Ganeun Gil/Mirage, Korea, 2011) – Trailer not subtitled. One of the Korean entries at the festival in Edinburgh. It’s a debut feature, in which the director, Yang Jung-ho, tells the tale of a novelist who loses his wallet on the way to his hometown of Incheon. As the man seeks help from people he once knew, he has to face up to an incident from long ago. What to say? Love the fragmentation/contrast of the first few seconds of the film trailer. Love the cinematography. The bloody faces (underlined by the trailer’s tone and imagery) hint at a darker something pervading the story and bound to make this a meditation-on-bleak-things that I so enjoy in films. KCCUK, I’m placing this one on the wishlist for London Korean Film Festival.
  • La Fee (The Fairy, Belgium/France, 2011) – I bookmarked this film about a man who encounters a real-life fairy and falls in love already a few months ago but wasn’t sure where to fit it or whether it’s really worth recommending. But then I read a review at the hollywoodreporter recently, which was rather encouraging. Rotten Tomatoes only seems to confirm this as La Fee, after 29 reviews, holds a 100% fresh rating. Clichéd fairy-tale love story this is not – rather, it’s one of those indefinable, way-out-there productions, a creative, whimsical comedy unpredictable in every turn it takes.
  • 「希望の国」 (Kibou no Kuni/The Land of Hope, Japan, 2012) – Only a teaser trailer for Sono Sion’s latest film but keeping my eye out for this. Asia-specialised UK distributor Third Window Films is partnering in Kibou no Kuni’s production by the way.
Rightie, I think we’ve ended up with a rather diverse mix of films today!
