The publication date of the English translations of Murakami Haruki’s 2009 magnum opus 1Q84 is soon approaching. Books 1 and 2 will be published on October 18, with Book 3 following on October 25 on both sides of the Atlantic. All are translated by Jay Rubin and Philip Gabriel and can be preordered (on Amazon or elsewhere).
Interestingly the German translations of Books 1 and 2 have been out for more than a year as have others (e.g. Thai, Dutch, Chinese, Korean), which makes you wonder why the US and UK publishers took so much longer, given the hype surrounding the book. Even if translations are usually a hard-sell in the English-speaking world, it is doubtful that this is also the case for anything written by Murakami.
There are some book trailers available also:
The trailers are actually not particularly interesting, although the Spanish one is somewhat more enticing. A much more innovative and captivating trailer is the one made for New Zealand writer Maurice Gee’s Going West, which, not surprisingly, won an award.
